NORTH STAR 2020

Bringing young people, educators, scientists and businesses together to explore the future of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) in the South Yorkshire Region

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the Universe exist. Be curious.”
Stephen Hawking
Theoretical Physicist

A week of inspiration and wonder to celebrate the best of Science, Technology, Engineering, arts and Maths (STEAM). Over 2,500 young people from across Rotherham, Sheffield and beyond came together to meet leaders from multiple fields of science to have their ambitions ignited.

We want to connect our young people to inspirational people and places which will spark their imaginations and help them see the great opportunities in STEAM in the UK.

Led by Professor Brian Cox, students from across Rotherham and Sheffield will experience a world class programme. Secondary schools can sign up to join our interactive live streamed events from their classrooms and enable students to connect to leading scientists, engineers and educators who are charting a course to a sustainable future. We hope that students will finish the week inspired for the future and confident in the opportunities for great careers stretching ahead of them.

The North Star programme promotes innovation and opportunity in the Sheffield City Region to inspire the next generation to consider careers in STEAM subjects. We back a vision for the UK to become the best place in world to practice Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths, and believe that inspired communities can chart their own path to health, wealth and happiness.

"We hope to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers and help them to realise their full potential."
Professor Brian Cox CBE
Physicist

PROGAMME

Tuesday 1st December 2020

An Afternoon with Professor Brian Cox

Schools from across Rotherham, Sheffield and beyond attended a virtual event with Professor Brian Cox CBE. Professor Cox gave an inspirational talk on ‘Space, Time and Black Holes’ followed by a curated Q&A answers questions pre-submitted by students. This event was hosted in Rotherham, but we will also welcome partner schools from across the UK.

Wednesday 2 December and Thursday 3 December

North Star Event – Engineering a sustainable future

Each afternoon delivered an exciting and engaging programme of STEAM. Each day students experienced a bespoke blend of live and pre-recorded activity and had the chance to experience inspirational talks, engage in interactive sessions and be exposed to the people and businesses operating at the cutting edge of science.

WHERE DID THE NORTH STAR SCIENCE SCHOOL COME FROM?

Initially by the Well Rotherham programme, a public health innovation initiative at South Yorkshire Housing Association, we are an ambitious cross-sector partnership of local industry, education and community organisations. Our activity culminated in the North Star event in 2020 delivered in partnership with Professor Brian Cox and Lord Andrew Mawson’s celebrated Science Summer School.

We believe that inspired communities can chart their own path to health, wealth and happiness. We see that beneath the regional vision for excellence sit the inspirational stories, endeavour and aspiration of thousands of people; like stars forming a galaxy.

The 2021 event was led by The Work-wise Foundation, an employer-led charity for STEM fields such as engineering and manufacturing, and beyond. We support the development of young people so they have the knowledge, skills, aptitude and opportunities for employment within the Sheffield City Region.

WHAT IS THE ST PAUL'S WAY SUMMER SCIENCE SCHOOL?

Now in its tenth year, St Paul’s Way Trust Science Summer School hosts this annual event with its Patron Professor Brian Cox OBE. St Paul’s Way Trust School, a ‘National Teaching School’ and a ‘Through School’, places science at the heart of the curriculum with its unique Faraday learning pathway. The aim is to inspire young people to become the next generation of Britain’s scientists.

Our new sixth form research laboratories, designed by Queen Mary University of London, build on this offer by giving students access to exciting and cutting edge research opportunities such as the Authentic Biology DNA research project.

The opportunities for exciting and innovative careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) are almost limitless. In line with our vision for excellence, the Science Summer School present an annual inspirational programme which mixes the best of STEAM subjects with a focus on Engineering, through a series of seminars, discussions and hands-on experiments.
