Call Out For Speakers & Workshops for North Star Science School Event

15 JUNE 2020

The North Star programme promotes and applauds innovation and opportunity in the Sheffield City Region to inspire the next generation to consider careers in STEAM subjects. Led by the Well Rotherham programme, we are an ambitious cross-sector partnership of local industry, education and community organisations.  Our activity will culminate in the North Star event in the Rother Valley on 1 December 2020 delivered in partnership with Professor Brian Cox and Lord Andrew Mawson’s celebrated Science Summer School

We’re making great progress on the North Star programme and we’re now looking to finalise our speakers and workshops for the North Star event on 1 December. In our first year, the event will explore the theme of Engineering a sustainable future – South Yorkshire’s Vision 2050.

We’re looking for five inspirational speakers to take to the podium alongside Profession Brian Cox to engage and captivate our students on 1 December.  Talks will be delivered in front of a group of 200 Year 8 and 9 science pupils. Each presenter giving an 18-minute ‘Ted-style’ illustrated talk. After talks, there will then be a short Q&A with the audience and speakers.

We would welcome approaches from people you know and recommendations for people you think will fit the bill. See the attached Speaker Brief for more information.

We are inviting a wide range of organisations and companies to pitch their ideas for a workshop. Final selection will be made by our student ambassadors making sure we secure workshops which are interesting and relevant to them and also that cover a range of topics from across the STEAM spectrum. We are particularly keen in workshops which demonstrate how scientific methods and processes can drive innovation and be applied creatively in the real world.

Workshops will be delivered to 20 young people and will last for an hour. The same workshops will be delivered four times throughout the day allowing 80/400 students to attend each workshop.

We have four workshops which will be developed directly with our partner schools. We have six available for selected partners. If people would like to provide a workshop, we’d invite them to submit proposals by the 19 June 2020. See the Workshop brief for more information.
